Faber-Castell Loom fountain pen review

Faber-Castell is a famous German brand known for manufacturing high-grade writing instruments and professional art supplies. The history of the company traces back to 1761, and its name has become a synonym of supreme quality. Generations of artists have grown up on the brand, so its products are time-tested.

The Faber-Castell Loom review describes a popular fountain pen that combines both outstanding functionality and a reasonable price tag. I’m going to examine this pen in detail to determine if this is true.

Faber Castell Loom Fountain Pen Highlights

To start with, I’ve checked the parameters of the Loom and its main characteristics. Make sure that this writing device is made of durable materials and is long and heavy enough for you.

If you’re looking for a worthy alternative to this pen, read the Pelikan Pura fountain pen review. Also performed in silver and black, this stylish device will catch your attention.

Appearance and Design Features

Faber-Castell is one of the oldest manufacturers of art supplies in the world, but most writing instruments the company makes have a contemporary design. This is the case with its Loom fountain pen, which has a distinctive cylindrical shape and is made with a sense of proportion.

Faber-Castell Loom fountain pen design

This model has a metal barrel with a glossy silver finish, but it is also available in other cap color options and in a matte barrel finish. Over the past years, the company has focused mainly on pastel shades.

The writing device is not long. The pen may look a bit chunky, but it is lightweight.

The cap is made of plastic. It is black and engraved with a company logo (jousting knights) and a company name. Also, there is a Faber-Castell emblem on the top of the spring clip. In addition, the cap gives extra length to the instrument. It takes moderate pressure to uncap the pen.

Towards the nib, the pen has a tapering plastic section with 5 textured rings located at regular intervals. This is unusual for the manufacturer because all its pens are known as having perfect cylindrical shapes. The embossed grooves prevent the instrument from being slippery in the user’s hands and ensure a comfortable writing experience. The transition between plastic and metal sections is seamless.

Faber-Castell is famous for its superb stainless steel nibs. The nib in this model has no breather hole but a dimple on the top surface. It is decorated with a company logo and has small dots. It is smooth and well-tuned. This model arrives with a nib in width M (medium), but the pen is also compatible with fine, extra-fine, and broad ones.

Writing Quality

The writing experience of the Loom Piano fountain pen is a joy. Firstly, the device feels comfortable in hand because it is well-balanced, not hefty, and has a textured grip. Secondly, thanks to a superb nib, you will never be frustrated with its work. The juicy nib offers a perfect level of wetness and ensures effortless writing. It works well on various types of paper and gives a little feedback, which is not intrusive. The nib suits the proportion and size of the pen perfectly. It is removable and can be cleaned.

The only problem with the Loom is that there is no ink viewing window.

Check the list of the most expensive pen brands in the world. You’ll be overwhelmed with unique designs and precious materials used to decorate these masterpieces.

The pen is not scratchy and surprisingly silent while you’re writing. If it becomes scratchy, this can be corrected with minor tuning. The users don’t experience any fatigue during long writing sessions. Since the cap is light, you can write with the pen posted. However, some users find that the unposted pen offers a better balance. Anyway, it’s a personal preference.

Filling System of Pen

The Loom offers a wide range of ink options. It works with a converter for fountain pens and takes some international converters as well (this should be tested with each brand). Unfortunately, this model doesn’t come with its own converter, and this device should be purchased separately.

This writing instrument is sold with a fitted ink cartridge. If you prefer bottled ink, you can use it in the medium, but it is also for an extra cost.

Pros and Cons

All Faber-Castell admirers adore this pen. Here are some thoughts of the Loom users about what they like and what they want to improve in the instrument.

Pros

  • Sold in a variety of cap colors and 2 finishes (matte/polished)
  • A modern-looking design
  • A metal body
  • Textured rings for a better grip
  • Precise manufacturing
  • Well-balanced
  • Smooth and effortless writing
  • Lightweight
  • Fits standard international converters

Cons

  • Doesn’t include a converter
  • Most pens are made in China, not in Germany
  • Some users still find the barrel slippery
  • Some customers may prefer a thinner body shape
The Pelikan M400 pen review describes a fountain pan with a higher price tag than the Loom. Enjoy an unforgettable writing experience thanks to its gold-plated nib.

Difference Between Faber Castell Loom Vs Basic Fountain Pens

Both models are excellent fountain pens in a similar price category, so it is hard to choose a favorite. These writing instruments feature solid construction and high-quality nibs. Thanks to interchangeable nibs, they are compatible with any nib types (fine, medium, broad). Both pens use cartridge/converter ink devices.

However, these writing media have slight differences. Check a comparison table: the Loom vs Basic.

The Loom The Basic
Has a metal barrel Has a plastic barrel, which is prone to cracking
Small in size Larger in size (If you prefer large pens, you don’t even need to cap the pen to extend its length)
Equipped with a spring-loaded clip Equipped with a folded metal clip
Features textured grooves on the barrel Features a rubberized grip section, which is more convenient

These models are great. You can select any of them depending on which pen peculiarities you prefer.

Conclusion

Summing up this review, I’d like to highlight that the Loom is a decent and solid-made fountain pen with an elegant design. I can describe it as a daily “working horse.” Its attractive appearance and German engineering make wonders. Also, you can be sure that this pen will never let you down. In addition, the price for this device on Amazon and eBay is very attractive. Highly rated by customers, the pen is surely worth buying.
