Design Elements of Pen

The M200 is one of the best-sellers in the Pelikan series. It features a classic and elegant shape, and thanks to the right combination of colors, all its components harmonize together.

Its barrel and a cap are round and made of quality acrylic resin. The barrel is the most beautiful part of the pen. Performed in varying shades of green (polished light green and dark green), it glows in the light and reminds a piece of shiny marble. The body is decorated with two 24-karat gold-plated rings: the center ring and the one that determines the end of the plunger-turning knob. This section is rather small, tapering towards the nib, and ends in a ridge. This is an ink window, but it is not visible when the pen is capped.

Pelikan M200 branded gift box

Royal green is nicely complemented by a glossy black cap with a gold trim design. The cap sports a gold clip shaped like a pelican’s bill. It is attached externally by a gold ring around the cap. The clip is not spring-loaded but springy. It is enough stiff but not too hard. The gold-on-black Pelikan logo crowns the cap.

This is a broad point fountain pen with a semi-flexible nib of stainless steel. The nib is also gold-plated and engraved with the company’s logo and the nib size. It features a slit and a breather hole.

A few words should be devoted to the amazing (and practical) packaging of the pen. It comes in a branded gift box with a number of smaller boxes and cardboard sleeves inside. The pen itself rests on a tray in a white faux-leather pouch, and brown satin ribbons add a nice touch to the overall appearance.

Writing Performance

The M200 is known for its interchangeable nibs, which can be purchased separately. The pen is also compatible with the M400 nibs and can be customized to your preference.

Pelikan interchangeable nibIf you like extra fine writing, the fine nibs in this model tend to write a little springy. The pen operates rather smoothly but with a bit of feedback.

The ink dries fairly fast. If you put some pressure, you may notice slight line variations. On very smooth paper, the pen can occasionally skip or hard start. Under regular writing conditions and with fast writing, the feed and nib keep up easily.

The M200 writes wet and is not recommended for cheap paper. It may cause feathering and smearing of the ink. Still, if you are planning to use this type of paper, buy drier ink.

As mentioned, this pen includes a broad nib, but it is broader than traditional broad nibs. Try extra-fine nibs with this model if you usually use fine ones with other fountain pens.

This Moleskine Art Plus sketchbook review is highly recommended for your reading. Being a favorite among most artists, this brand offers outstanding and quality sketchbooks that are worthy of your attention.

Pelikan M200 Usability

The M200 is small and lightweight. People with larger hands may find it too short. When posted, it grows larger.

Pelikan M200 barrel and a cap

The cap gives extra length to the writing tool, and the pen looks more substantial. It is well balanced even with a cap on. It feels very comfortable in hand and is suitable for long writing sessions.

The pen is equipped with a piston-filling mechanism that is very reliable and easy to use. It allows the writing instrument to hold 1.5 ml of ink. This amount is twice larger than the capacity of a standard ink cartridge. To fill the pen, twist the turning knob to push the plunger down and then twist it back.

The M200 can be easily disassembled for cleaning as well. Before filling the pen with ink, you can flush it.

With a pair of good scissors, you will get the best and most accurate cuts. Don’t let inefficient cutting instruments tell you how to work.

Pros and Cons

The owners of the Pelikan M200 are satisfied with the pen, but there are a few points that can become a deal breaker for potential users.

Pros

  • Has an ink viewing window
  • Makes no skips or hard starts
  • Arrives nicely and securely packaged
  • Compatible with various nib sizes
  • Gorgeous design and color selection
  • Lightweight
  • Provides smooth writing
  • The nib unit unscrews for easy cleaning

Cons

  • Too wet for cheap paper
  • Too small for larger (or arthritic) hands
  • Expensive

Summing Up

When you see the pictures of the M200, you might think that it is very attractive. When you hold it in hand, you will think it is beautiful. In addition, the pen is functional and easy to maintain. It features a classic ink filling system and can be used with a variety of nibs. With its incredible packaging, this can be an excellent gift for your friends, colleagues, or family members. Its marbled look is traced back to the 1930s, while the re-styled M200 can be a stunning vehicle for your new and modern ideas!
