Are you making your first steps in drawing? Does it seem to you a little bit tough? For sure, you should know the first steps are always difficult, and the only thing you should do is to be patient and find new sources of knowledge. For example, if you want to draw something but you don’t know what to start with, then check the tutorials and recommendations of professionals, who share their knowledge. By the way, this article is specially designed for those who want to learn how to draw a hood hiding a face. Moreover, it is a step-by-step tutorial so it won’t be difficult to repeat them on your piece of paper. Thus, be attentive to each step in order not to miss something.
Necessary Tools for Hood Drawing
Of course, nobody can produce any drawing without the necessary tools, particularly when you need to draw a person and their appearance. In this case, you may need the tools that can produce enough shades, and still, all the tiny details can be easy to identify.
The most appropriate pencil that can work on both precision and shading simultaneously is an HB pencil. However, for more depth and giving a realistic look to your drawing, you may require more soft-core pencils, particularly B3 and B7. For this particular purpose, great Staedtler pencils may occur the optimal decision.
And, finally, of course, don’t forget about a piece of paper or a special pad. On a separate note, you should have an eraser and shading tool that, actually, adds a magic to your art.
Contours of Face
Never start your project with obvious outlining details since this may cause lots of mistakes. Thus, in order not to make the same job twice, you should prepare the guides that will help you to stay within your plan. We are observing the tutorial of the front depicting a man wearing a hood. Thus, the first step is vertical dividing a piece of paper into two parts by drawing a light line in the middle of the sheet. Then outline the lower roundish parts of the face such as cheekbones and chin. After that, go down and contour the neck.
Drawing Traits
The next step requires a more scrupulous job compared to the previous steps. You will need to precise the lower parts of the face such as nose and lips. In fact, just outline the nostrils and the end of the nose, then the shape of closed lips. Note that these features should be of medium size, and it should match the cheekbone width and chin.
Inner Lines of Hood
Remember that we are trying to achieve a picture of someone in a hood? And finally, it’s time for hood now. Thus, making soft and wavy lines, contour the hood. This effect will boost the realistic perception since the fabric usually lays down unevenly.
Outer Lines of Hood
The next stage also concerns the hood, but this time it’s about the outer edge. This will accent the shape of the silhouette. And, hopefully, the middle line that was drawn at the beginning helped you keep the central details correctly. Now, you can erase it since it’s not necessary anymore.
Illustrating Details
This stage requires your imagination since all the details on clothes are usually added spontaneously and depend on the artist. Here you can depict some decorative elements, such as seam, lashings, and others that are hardly or partly seen in the picture.
Hood Toning
Now, we’ve reached the moment that involves the other tools. Thus, take a softer B3 pencil and tone the whole surface of the hood except some parts in the upper left segment. This blank will work as a spot of the light.
For the more realistic look and showing the fabric wrinkles, add wavy lines and the stroked area around them. The strokes should be done with a more darker tone of a pencil. The seams and other decorative hood elements have to be more saturated.
The softest tool in the tool set is specially designed for a face. Thus, add a shadow that falls down onto a face from the hood. You might also notice that this stage involves the darkest tones in this drawing. That is why, in order to make this picture recognizable, all the strokes should be brought intensively and tightly. Make sure that this procedure adds depth to your drawing.
Face Toning
Actually, the previous procedure wasn’t the last one in upgrading the face. Now, you need to add the shadow onto the whole face. However, the left part of the nose bridge and chin should stay as they are. These elements should stay light since they are under the light.
Meanwhile, the darker shade should cover the area under the lower lip and then on the lip, too. This effect should make these details more voluminous. You may also want to add vertical strokes, but then their outer contour should be erased by the eraser. This will make them more realistic.
Add Shades in Neck Area
Don’t forget about the neck area and everything around it. Making some oblique lines will produce the shape of neck muscles. In addition, note that the neck in the middle is lighter than the outer sides. The neck area that is inside the hood should be quite dark and thus the strokes here need to be applied more intensively.
Sum Up
In fact, this type of drawing is not quite easy as it seems at first glance. However, WoWPencils did the best in order to make the most understandable tutorial. Hopefully, it was clear enough for you. Moreover, in case you didn’t make it as you wanted, don’t be upset since the more you practice, the better results you get. That is why you need to stick to the rule to train on an everyday basis. This is the only thing that will hone your skills so you can achieve the highest results.
